How do digital technologies affect the field of jewellery making?
Over the last two decades the development and adoption of digital technologies has rapidly accelerated, becoming a dominant component of contemporary society. There has been a democratisation of creative production: the information and tools necessary to make and distribute creative works is now available to huge numbers of the global population, including previously marginalised people. Now anyone can be a jewellery maker. Established hierarchies are breaking down and new paths are open to makers. There are however several negative consequences of the digital revolution. Production systems have been changed, the less efficient methods of making are substituted by mechanical ones, serial work and mass production. The change of economic system influenced the production and market of jewellery as well. Increasingly bigger part of the traditional jewellery is made in mass production like systems, not by hand, therefore traditional craftsmanship technics started to diminish. A driving force for this phenomenon is the spreading of digital technologies in jewellery making on every level.
Fabian’s piece is a memento of this age in which we are changing our craftsmanship knowledge to digital solutions, letting ourselves sink into a blind dependence.
