Chained
2020
Chained was my graduation work at the Sandberg Instituut. This project began with a necklace I made during the Marzee Ravary workshop in the summer of 2019, using wine bottles shared with my fellow graduates. The piece became a condensed form of our shared memories and sparked my interest in the role of everyday objects – especially commodities – in shaping our lives.
Rather than demonizing industrial production, I explore its potential symbiosis with craft. Although Western cultures increasingly value individual self-expression, identity is still largely articulated through mass-produced goods. This contradiction highlights the capacity of craft to generate a unique quality that mass production cannot provide.
By colliding and merging the mass-produced with the unique, I aimed to visualize our conflicted relationship with objects today. This approach led to my thesis at the Sandberg Instituut, where I conducted a survey on identity and objects, asking participants which possessions best express who they are. I made the first couple of necklaces by transforming some of these artefacts, which later developed into my broader, ongoing body of work You, me and your stuff.
The project Chained expanded across media, comprising short stories and several musical singles produced through collaboration – experimenting with an interdisciplinary approach to create intricate biographies for the works.
